Barely five hours after filing his nomination papers at the Independent Electoral Commission for the Dec 4 presidential election, Ousainou Darboe was in an optimistic mood as he addressed supporters at the Independence stadium.
The massive political rally was attended by tens of thousands of party militants, who had earlier turned out to accompany their party flagbearer, Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party, UDP, to the Election House.
Darboe, who declared that he was optimistic of victory in the election, told his cheering supporters, who filled the stadium, that everyone should be an ambassador of peace.
He went on to call for violence-free elections, saying: “we should all respect the laws of the country; we should not behave in any manner that will threaten the peace and stability of the country.”
One political analyst told The Alkamba Times that UDP’s chances of winning the presidential elections look bright, considering the mammoth crowds which the party continues to attract everywhere and all the time.
He said filling the 25, 000-capacity stadium in Bakst is the latest sign of what could happen, come Dec 4.
