In a proactive move to safeguard the country from the ongoing Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in parts of Central and East Africa, The Gambia’s Ministry of Health has issued a detailed public health advisory, urging citizens to stay vigilant while reinforcing national preparedness measures.
The advisory comes after the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) declared the Ebola situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a public health emergency. Although The Gambia currently has no suspected or confirmed cases, health authorities are taking no chances.
According to the official notice signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, the government has activated a comprehensive response framework. Key measures include enhancing surveillance at all points of entry — Banjul International Airport, the seaport, and major land borders — to screen travelers and prevent importation of the virus.
The Ministry has also reactivated Rapid Response Teams across all regions, intensified public awareness campaigns, and placed the National Public Health Emergency Operations Center on high alert, in line with recommendations for priority three countries. Coordination meetings with partners are ongoing to ensure a unified national response.
A stark warning forms a central part of the advisory: “Do not touch or prepare the body of any person who has died of an unknown cause or suspected Ebola. Report such deaths to the nearest health facility authority. Safe and dignified burials will be arranged.”
The Ministry is calling on the public to remain calm but highly alert. Any suspected case of Ebola, unusual alert, or death of unknown cause should be reported immediately to the nearest health facility or the Ministry’s Media Center via the 24/7 toll-free hotline, 1025.
Health officials emphasized that early reporting is critical to containing any potential spread. “The Gambia remains free of Ebola, and we are committed to maintaining that status through vigilance and rapid response,” the advisory states.
This latest development reflects lessons learned from previous West African outbreaks, where community engagement and swift surveillance proved decisive. Residents are advised to continue practicing good hygiene, avoid contact with sick individuals or wildlife, and rely on official channels for updates.
The Ministry reassured the public that the situation is being closely monitored and that all necessary resources are being mobilized to protect national health security. As regional partners battle the outbreak, The Gambia’s swift preparedness actions demonstrate a strong commitment to preventing the virus from crossing its borders.
