The United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) have taken a significant step toward forming a pre-election alliance, with the PPP’s Central Committee formally approving a draft agreement that paves the way for deeper cooperation under a UDP-led coalition.
The development comes as both parties position themselves for the upcoming presidential election. A ceremonial signing of the final Alliance Agreement is scheduled for the coming weeks, followed by a joint press briefing by UDP and PPP leaders to outline the coalition’s terms to the public.
In a statement released today, the PPP confirmed that its Central Committee, chaired by Party Leader and Secretary General Hon. Ousman Madikay Faal, met to review and debate the draft alliance agreement negotiated with the UDP.
Faal opened the meeting by stressing the importance of transparency, internal democracy, and broad consultation. “Major political decisions must reflect the collective views of the Party’s leadership and constitutional structures,” he told members, according to the statement.
After extensive deliberations, the Central Committee approved the draft, authorizing the party’s negotiation team to proceed to the next phase of consultations. However, the PPP made clear that no alliance agreement has been signed yet. Any formal signing will depend on completing further internal consultations and decision-making processes.
“The Party will continue to keep its members, supporters, and the general public informed of any further developments regarding the alliance discussions and signing ceremony,” the statement concluded.
The approval marks a key milestone in efforts to build a united front against incumbent President Barrow. Sources close to the negotiations say the alliance envisions a UDP-led ticket, with the PPP playing a strategic supporting role to consolidate opposition votes and present a stronger challenge in the presidential race.
