In just under hours, the Scorpions of The Gambia will make history when they took to the pitch to kick the ball in the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time when they take on Mauritania in their group opener.
Gambian holding midfielder Sulayman Marreh is confident that the Scorpions will collect maximum points when they take on the AL- Mourabitoues of Mauritania.
“We are very much excited to be here to represent our country in the highest level of football tournament in Africa”, He said.
The dynamic midfielder who has been outstanding for The Gambia during the qualifiers say they ‘understand what football means for the people of The Gambia’ and they are willing to make the country proud with a win in their first game.
“As a young man growing up, it was always a dream to see our country in the AFCON and finally that dream turned into reality. This will serve as a morale booster for us to do everything possible in other to secure a win against Mauritania, he added.
Sulayman Marreh who played his club football with the Belgian first division side K. A. A Gent is among the most consistent players who have been representing the Gambia National team over the years.
The tie will be a debut for the Scorpions, while it will be Mauritania’s second appearance.
