State Representative Samba Baldeh announced his candidacy for Wisconsin Senate District 16 in the upcoming state Senate elections in Madison, Wisconsin, United States.
Baldeh, who hails from Gambia, has become the first Muslim and African-born to hold a seat in the Wisconsin legislature representing the 48th Assembly District.
Mr. Baldeh confirmed his intention to run for state senate with Alkamba Times and called for support to achieve his dream as an African immigrant.
His commitment to public service was further demonstrated when he was elected alder on the City of Madison Common Council in 2015. In this role, he championed public safety and community policing and ensured district residents were well-supported in their interactions with the city. Recognizing his leadership, he was elected Council President after his first term in office, a testament to his ability to bring about positive change.
In 2020, Baldeh was elected State Representative for the 48th Assembly District (Madison’s north and far east side). He is the first Muslim and African-born to serve in the state legislature.
In his first term, Baldeh was selected to serve on the Assembly Rules Committee, Small Business Development, Science and Information Technology, and Licensing and Regulation. He currently serves on the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation board.
Rep. Samba Baldeh, a remarkable individual, hails from the West African nation of The Gambia. His journey to the United States nearly two decades ago was marked by determination and resilience. Settling in Madison, he pursued his education at Madison College, specializing in Information Technology. His thirst for knowledge led him to further studies at UW-Madison. For the past 20 years, he has been a dedicated IT Project Manager at American Family Insurance.
In addition to being a board member of WEDC, Baldeh currently serves on the following state committees – Committee on Local Government, Committee for Review of Administrative Rules, Committee on State Affairs, Committee on Ways and Means, Joint Committee for Review of Administrative Rules, Joint Committee on Information Policy and Technology, Speaker’s Task Force on Artificial Intelligence.
