Modou Mboob, a prominent figure in the Citizens’ Alliance (CA), has formally withdrawn his candidature for Secretary General and Party Leader positions, citing the need for peace and unity within the party. The announcement follows months of internal revitalization efforts led by current leader Dr. Ismaila Ceesay.
In December 2024, Mboob declared his intent to contest for CA leadership at the party’s National Congress, driven by concerns over the party’s declining activity and fading core values. “I resolved to challenge the status quo and lead the call for change,” Mboob stated, highlighting the dormancy of regional structures at the time.
However, the postponement of the Congress allowed the current leadership to make significant strides, including engaging regional structures and convening mandated regional congresses. These efforts, Mboob noted, have “rekindled enthusiasm within the party’s grassroots.” Following consultations with regional leaders and supporters, Mboob was advised to pursue dialogue and allow Dr. Ceesay to complete his term to avoid division.
“As someone who aspires to lead in the interest of the people, I believe that listening… is not only prudent but noble,” Mboob said. Emphasizing his Islamic faith, he underscored the importance of peace and unity, stating, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Mboob also highlighted his nearly decade-long friendship with Dr. Ceesay, adding that preserving their bond and party unity outweighs personal ambition.
Mboob reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and accountability in governance by expressing gratitude to his supporters. Quoting the Qur’an, he reminded Gambians that “authority is entirely with Allah” and urged patience amid national challenges. He also called on political leaders to lead sincerely, warning that “Allah detests those who break their promises.”
Mboob prayed for unity and wisdom, pledging to continue serving The Gambia. “A change is certainly coming, In Shaa Allah,” he said.
