Following the successful U15 league—where Lahaiba FA emerged as champions—the B4L Youth League Initiative, in partnership with the Brikama Sports Committee, has officially launched a new U17 youth league. The tournament features 24 teams from across the Kanifing Municipality (KM), West Coast Region, and beyond. Among the notable participants are BK West United, Medina Football Academy, Tijan Jaiteh Football Academy, Jarisu Talents, KWT, and several others.
The U15 league previously served as a major stepping stone, with standout players making their way to the U17 national team and even earning trials with European clubs.
The U17 league kicked off with an exciting opener between KWT and San Mames, ending in a 1-1 draw. Kuloro-based KWT took the lead early through a goal from Dembo Gibba, but newcomers San Mames, based in SaTayBaa, equalized in the second half thanks to a composed finish by Kawsu Barrow.
“We’re happy to be back with a U17 league,” said Babou Mbye, one of the league’s coordinators. “Most of the boys who started with us at U15 are now 16. Many were left out last time, so this expansion meets the growing demand for youth football in The Gambia. The response from academies has been overwhelming, which shows the urgent need to structure and standardize youth football across the country.”
San Mames’ Head Coach, Ensa Ceesay, expressed his excitement about joining the competition. “The standard of the league is excellent and it’s a great platform for our boys. We’ve been training for years and finally have a structured tournament to showcase our talents. The fact that matches are being recorded is a huge plus—it allows us to analyze and improve. Having reputable football agencies like Ebanor and Modoustic as partners, as well as game coverage via Eyeball, gives our players valuable exposure.”

This initiative is helping to elevate youth football in The Gambia. By providing consistent competition, exposure to scouts, and structured pathways for progression, the U17 youth league helps identify and nurture young talent. It also encourages local academies to raise their standards, invest in coaching, and build sustainable programs. With proper guidance and platforms like this, Gambian youth players now have a clearer route to both national and international recognition—laying the foundation for a brighter future in Gambian football.
