Foni zonal team has written history by booking a spot in the West Coast Region Zonal final for the first time in its history, after coming from behind to beat Sanyang in a thrilling game which was decided at the post-match penalties after stalemate 2-2 in the regulation time.
The game ended 2:2, with Sanyang scoring their goals in the first half of the match. In contrast, Foni scored a goal in the last few minutes before halftime and successfully secured another goal on the first in the 47th minute.
The game was decided at the penalty shootout, where Foni’s goalkeeper Alieu Joof saved penalty kicks with all the players of his team scored, which secured Foni a spot in the final to face Gunjur in the WCR Zonal 2023 final, which is scheduled to be played during the Christmas holiday.
In an interview with The Alkamba Times, Ebrima Camara, the Head Coach of Foni, said his team defeating Sanyang was not a surprise because they had done it before in a game against Brikama.
He added that the talent in Foni when it comes to football has been clearly demonstrated, coming from two goals to win the game.
Camara added that this victory means a lot to his coaching career and that he has done something remarkable in his home.
“I don’t want to leave this legacy without taking the trophy home, and that is why I want to take this trophy home,” he said.
The Head Coach for Sanyang said his team has been doing a tremendous job in football, but things turned upside down for him in today’s semi-final.
He, therefore, thanked his players for making up to the semi-final even though they were surprised to be stopped by the Foni boys at that stage.
“We just want to play the final, but unfortunately, we stopped here, and I would advise Sanyang that we go back and prepare ourselves for the next year’s zonal,” he said.
