Rotarian Lamin Keita was officially installed as the new President of the Rotary Club of Banjul for the 2026-2027 Rotary year during a colorful handover ceremony held at the Kairaba Hotel on Thursday, 3rd July 2026.

In his acceptance speech, Keita expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him to lead what he described as “the premier and largest Rotary Club in The Gambia.” He reflected on his personal Rotary journey, which began years ago during a casual lunch break at his former workplace when a colleague shared news of a community project being handed over by the club.

“Following my curiosity, he explained the club’s goals and encouraged me to visit the Rotary International website,” Keita recounted. “After reading more about the organization, I realized that this was exactly what I was meant to do.” He noted with appreciation that the same colleague, Secretary Kehinde Omotowa, will serve alongside him in the coming year.

Keita paid special tribute to Assistant Governor Isatou Bah and Immediate Past President Rohey for their guidance, as well as the club’s experienced board members and fellow Rotarians. He also thanked his wife, Ida, and children, Fatoumatta and Mohammed, for their unwavering support despite the demands of Rotary service, and acknowledged his office colleagues for their understanding.

Highlighting Rotary’s global impact, the new President reminded guests that the organization comprises nearly 45,000 clubs worldwide. Together with partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent and contributed over US$3 billion to protect more than three billion children. Over the past century, The Rotary Foundation has awarded more than US$5.5 billion for sustainable community projects in health, education, clean water, economic development, and environmental protection.

Keita welcomed visiting Rotarians from neighboring clubs in Zig, Kaps, and Bissau, urging them to enjoy “the beauty of the smiling coast.”

He concluded by reaffirming his commitment: “I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to serve.”

The well-attended ceremony underscored the strong spirit of fellowship and service that defines the Rotary Club of Banjul.
