On this World Press Freedom Day, The Alkamba Times joins the global community in celebrating the fundamental principles of press freedom, reflecting on the critical role of free and independent media in fostering democracy, transparency, and accountability in The Gambia.

As we commemorate the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, we honor the courage and dedication of Gambian journalists who work tirelessly to inform, educate, and empower our citizens despite numerous challenges. This year’s celebration theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” underscores the vital role of journalism in addressing pressing global issues, including environmental sustainability, which resonates deeply in our nation.

In The Gambia, we have witnessed significant strides in press freedom since the democratic transition in 2017, with the emergence of new media outlets and increased opportunities for open discourse. However, challenges such as legal threats, financial constraints, and societal pressures continue to test the resilience of our media landscape. The Alkamba Times remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding journalistic integrity, amplifying marginalized voices, and holding power to account, even in the face of adversity, as exemplified by our ongoing legal battle to defend our right to report freely.

We thank the Gambia Press Union, our partners, and the international community for their unwavering support in advancing press freedom. We also pay tribute to journalists who have faced harassment, intimidation, or worse in the pursuit of truth. Their sacrifices remind us that press freedom is not just a right but a cornerstone of a just society.

Today, we call on the Government of The Gambia to fully implement the Access to Information Act, repeal outdated media laws, and foster an environment where journalists can operate without fear of reprisal. We urge our fellow citizens to champion a free press by supporting independent media and engaging in informed dialogue.

The Alkamba Times reaffirms its pledge to deliver fact-based, inclusive, and impactful journalism that serves the public good. Let us build a Gambia where the press thrives as a beacon of truth, justice, and progress.

For a Free Press, For a Stronger Gambia.
