The United Democratic Party (UDP) has publicly rejected an audio recording circulating on social media that allegedly features a party member threatening staff of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and members of the Gambia Armed Forces.

In a statement issued on October 13, 2026, the party’s Media and Communications Team said the remarks, if verified, are “unacceptable and fundamentally inconsistent” with its values, principles, and commitment to peaceful democratic engagement. The party stated that it does not condone threats, intimidation, or any language that seeks to undermine the safety, dignity, or independence of national institutions.

The UDP emphasized the constitutional roles of both bodies. It noted that the IEC administers elections, while the Gambia Armed Forces safeguard the country’s sovereignty and security. The party said both institutions must be allowed to carry out their mandates free from threats, intimidation, or undue pressure.

With the December 5, 2026, presidential election approaching, the UDP’s National Executive called on members, supporters, and sympathizers to exercise restraint, uphold discipline, and behave responsibly in political activities both online and offline. The party stressed that its pursuit of political change is rooted in democratic principles, respect for the rule of law, and the will of the Gambian people expressed through credible, free, and fair elections.

It added that disagreements with institutions or public officials must be addressed through lawful and peaceful means rather than inflammatory rhetoric. The UDP also urged Gambians across the political spectrum to reject violence, intimidation, and hate-filled language, describing a peaceful electoral environment as a collective responsibility shared by political parties, electoral authorities, security institutions, the media, and citizens.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process, saying it will continue to advocate for electoral integrity and accountability while respecting the law and the institutions entrusted with protecting democracy. “Our quest for political change must never come at the expense of national peace, unity, and stability,” the statement concluded.
