The Commission on Political Debates, in partnership with the Election Platform, has conducted the first rural debate for political candidates in Farafenni, North Bank Region of the Gambia, ahead of the April 2023 local government elections.
The debate was held between candidates from three major political parties, including one independent candidate.
The candidates consist of Malick Samba of the National People’s Party (NPP), Alhagie Hydara of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Abdoulie Sabally of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), and Modou Mboge as an Independent.
The CDP is also committed to organizing subsequent debates for Mayoral and Chairmanship elections in Mansakonko Area Council, Brikama Area Council, Kanifing Municipal Council, and Banjul City Council, respectively.
The Executive Director of the Commission on Political Debates, Bakary Fatty, expressed delight over a successful first-ever rural debate. He said the discussion conducted was community driven and demanded by the area’s people.
“I’m so excited that the message CPD has been championing since 2016 is now resonating well with the people, especially those living in rural Gambia. We plan to have a similar debate in Mansakonko, Brikama, Kanifing, and Banjul,” Fatty told TAT.
“The ordinary people—young and old demanded to hear from these candidates what they have to offer if and when elected into office,” he added.
Mr. Fatty encourages other communities to also support these debates as a tool for their political awareness and decision-making process.
The CDP seeks to serve The Gambia in pursuing political correctness, good governance, peace, and political competitiveness.
