The National Assembly Member of Lattrikunda, Yayha Menteng Sanyang, in a letter addressed to the ECOWAS Political Commission, said President Adama Barrow’s Niani utterance against Opposition is a threat to the peace and political democracy in The Gambia.
President Adama Barrow, in commissioning roads and political bureaus last week, said he would change his procedure because the Gambian democracy is too much and will order the police chief to detain whoever says anything to incite violence in The Gambia.
Honorable Sanyang described this utterance as reckless and threatening the Country’s peace in a concern letter to the ECOWAS commission and a Heads of State.
“I am writing to express my deep concern about the recent reckless utterances of President Adama Barrow of The Gambia, which I believe to threaten peace and political democratic stability in the Country.
“These utterances are deeply troubling, and I urge you to take all necessary steps to ensure President Barrow does not act on this threat,” he wrote.
He said that The Gambian people deserve to live in a peaceful environment like any democratic country.
He further claimed that the utterances against the Opposition by the president have the potential to incite violence in the Country, and the statements could usher in a ‘fresh dictatorship’ in the Country.
Furthermore, he urged the ECOWAS Heads of State to advise President Barrow to retreat from the threats the utterance of opposition parties and supporters while arguing that the statements contravened Article 2 of the ECOWAS Charter on Democracy and Good Governance.
