On Saturday, President Barrow dedicated part of his weekend to inspect the progress of the OIC-related and government-funded road projects in the Kanifing Municipality and the West Coast Region.
Senior government members and contractors accompanied him on various projects. The tour allowed him to gather firsthand information on the level of implementation, challenges, and measures taken to mitigate them.
The projects visited include Old Jeshwang-New Jeshwang Road, Bundung Highway, Brufut-Ghana Town and Wulinkama Road, Sukuta-Bijilo Road, Mariama Kunda-Youna-Sare Pateh Road, Farato Bojang Kunda-Bafuluto-Makumbaya-Lamin Road, and two roads linking Gunjur and Sanyang respectively to the seaside.
While most of the projects are progressing well, others need more work. Most are funded as part of the Gambia’s hosting of the OIC Summit.
“You know we are hosting the Summit this week, and as we approach it, I decided to come out and see how we are progressing. So far, I think we have progressed very well, but we still have work to do, and we will continue with the projects, even after the Summit is over,” he told reporters at the end of the tour.
President Barrow said the roads, when completed, will change the entire road network and impact the traffic.
People came out to applaud the President at all places, but the most eye-catching moment was in Brufut, where large, jubilant crowds stormed the Presidential convoy.
In 2021, President Barrow promised to construct the road linking Gamtel Junction to the inner town of Brufut and Ghana Town; on his return, President Barrow is proud that he has fulfilled his promises to the people of Brufut and satellite communities.
The contractors promised the President that most of the projects would be completed before the rainy season or by the end of the year.
