Gambian sports journalism took a significant leap forward as young Photographer Sarjo Baldeh from The Gambia joined 23 other journalists from 13 countries in the AIPS Young Reporters Programme held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Programme kicked off from October 1-8, 2024. The participants gained hands-on experience covering the Saudi Games 2024, an opportunity aimed at developing future leaders in sports media.

Sarjo Baldeh, the second Vice President of the Sports Journalists Association of the Gambia, was among more than twenty young reporters from different countries. They had the opportunity to learn from journalism experts about the essentials of sports journalism and to explore other cultures and journalistic styles.

Gambian camera maestro Sarjo Baldeh, commonly called Baldez, shared her experience with TAT.

“My experience covering the Saudi game was great. There is so much difference from other games I have covered. The culture is different, and I have seen so much professionalism and dedication to their 2030 vision.” She told TAT

Despite the differences in culture and traditions of various participants, Baldeh made a significant milestone on this trip as she could deal with her duties on time. This included writing an article, which differed from Baldeh’s usual task of taking quality pictures. She wrote a publication that was later featured on the AIPS website.

“My perspective about sports journalism has changed a lot. I have learned so much and am ready to share my knowledge.”

She called on colleagues in the media to do more  “research and step out of your comfort zone.”

Covering the Saudi Games and working alongside experienced professionals has enhanced Sarjo’s skills and broadened her perspective on the future of sports media.

“This program has also helped me further develop as a representative of The Gambia on the global stage, and I am proud to bring these experiences back to our local media community, she said.
