Banjul Hosts Historic Launch of COPESA SDGs 2030 Initiatives to Propel Local Action

In a landmark event, the Banjul City Council (BCC) hosted the official launch of the COPESA SDGs 2030 Initiatives in Africa, reaffirming the nation’s dedication to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The initiative unites non-profit organizations, local actors, and global stakeholders to accelerate the localization of the SDGs. Anchored on community-driven participation and empowerment, this milestone seeks to foster sustainable development across Africa, with Banjul at the forefront.

Speaking on behalf of the Lord Mayoress, Ajaratou Rohey Malick Lowe, Deputy Mayor Abdou Aziz Dabakh Gaye highlighted the importance of collective action. “This initiative is a call to action for everyone—governments, organizations, and citizens alike—to collaborate and localize the SDGs. We can ensure a sustainable future for The Gambia and the African continent.”

The event also featured remarks from Mr. Modou Jonga, Chief Executive Officer of Banjul City Council.

Jonga emphasized, “The success of the COPESA SDGs 2030 Initiatives depends on innovative solutions and local ownership. At BCC, we are committed to empowering our communities to take the lead in achieving these global goals.”

Under the leadership of Lord Mayoress Ajaratou Rohey Malick Lowe, Banjul has increasingly gained recognition as a hub for sustainable innovation. Her dedication to advancing the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda was commended throughout the event.

Reflecting on her commitment, the Deputy Mayor shared her vision: “Our Lord Mayoress has always believed in the transformative power of the SDGs. This launch solidifies her tireless efforts to create opportunities for women, youth, and marginalized communities in Banjul and beyond.”

Senior management and honorable councilors of BCC were applauded for their invaluable contributions to the launch, underscoring the council’s collective commitment to driving sustainable development.

With the successful launch of the COPESA SDGs 2030 Initiatives in Africa, Banjul has positioned itself as a beacon of progress, fostering partnerships that promise transformative change.
