During a press conference held at the police anti-crime unit headquarters in Banjulinding, the Gambia Police Force announced that D599,000 was recovered from the two suspects, Ousainou and Abdoulie, while an additional D390,000 was retrieved from a driver who had been given the vehicle used in the operation to facilitate their escape from Banjul. The suspects have not disclosed how the stolen money was divided among them.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police at the Crime Investigation Division of the Gambia Police Force, Demba Sowe, stated that the police are aware of criminals’ ongoing plans to execute their activities. However, he emphasized the police’s commitment to protecting the citizens and residents of The Gambia, with a particular focus on investors who are often targeted in robbery incidents.
He assured that the police would exert all efforts to combat crime and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
“There is no hiding place for criminals outside The Gambia,” AIG Demba Sowe declared during a press conference. He reassured investors of their safety and encouraged them to continue their routine business activities in the country.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Seedy Muktar Touray emphasized the Gambia Police Force’s strong commitment to maintaining the nation’s security.
In his remarks, IGP Touray acknowledged the criticisms the police force faced, stating, “The Gambia Police Force has been maligned, ridiculed, and sent to tatters. Many things have been said about us. We accept this in good faith, and we’re not apportioning blame to anyone because that’s what we signed up for.”
He further stated his personal commitment to his role, asserting, “If we are unable to protect the lives and property of this nation, let me be on record โ I, Seedy Muktar Touray, will be the first to tender my resignation to the executive, saying I have failed in my duties and am relieving myself of my responsibilities.”
