President Adama Barrow, Secretary General and Party Leader of the National People’s Party (NPP), has congratulated the United Democratic Party (UDP) and its leader, ANM Ousainou Darboe, on their victory in the recent Masembeh Ward by-election in Mansa Konko Administrative Area.

The UDP successfully retained its councilorship seat, which Barrow hailed as a testament to the ward’s residents’ confidence in the opposition party.

In a statement released today, Barrow praised the UDP’s achievement while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fostering political pluralism in The Gambia.

“The peaceful and transparent conduct of the Masembeh Ward by-election, as well as the post-election period, underscore significant progress we are making as a nation in strengthening our democratic institutions and processes,” he said.

Barrow emphasized that a vibrant multi-party democracy is vital for the country’s growth and development.

The NPP leader also underscored his government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law, human rights, and civil liberties, pledging to create an inclusive environment where all Gambians can freely express their political views.

“We are deeply committed to building a Gambia that not only reflects but respects the principles of fundamental human rights and our sacred civil liberties,” Barrow added.

While extending congratulations to the UDP, Barrow took a moment to commend the efforts of the NPP’s candidate, supporters, and members in Masembeh Ward. He praised their discipline and maturity throughout the electoral process, calling their participation a “dignified and spirited fight” worthy of admiration.

The statement concluded with a call for continued collaboration between the NPP, UDP, and other political parties to build a “prosperous, peaceful, and inclusive Gambia for all.”

The Masembeh Ward by-election has been widely regarded as a marker of The Gambia’s evolving democratic landscape.
