The Human Genetics Awareness Association (HuGAA) has made a significant contribution to The Gambia’s healthcare system by donating brand-new uniforms to frontline workers, including nurses and doctors. The uniforms, sourced from Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital in Wales, UK, were handed over during a ceremony at the Regional Health Directorate in Kanifing on July 8, 2025, through the generosity of Mr. Robert Munden Jones.

The event, attended by healthcare workers, government officials, and HuGAA representatives, marked a meaningful step in supporting Gambia’s medical community. The uniforms will be distributed to hospitals nationwide, including the Brufut Health Center, to enhance the professional environment for healthcare providers.

Omar Dampha, officer in charge of Brufut Health Center, expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of his colleagues. “These uniforms are more than just attire; they uplift our morale and reinforce our commitment to serving our communities,” Dampha said. He emphasized that the donation acknowledges the critical role of healthcare workers in delivering quality care nationwide.

Sainabou Ndure, HuGAA’s founder and chairperson, underscored the importance of collaboration in advancing healthcare goals. “This donation reflects HuGAA’s dedication to supporting The Gambia’s socio-economic development and complementing government efforts,” Ndure stated. An accomplished geneticist, she highlighted the organization’s mission to foster partnerships that strengthen public health initiatives.

The ceremony also marked the beginning of a promising relationship between HuGAA and The Gambia’s public health sector. Ndure announced HuGAA’s openness to further collaboration, including radio programs, lectures, and workshops on human genetics. These initiatives aim to raise awareness about genetic diseases and promote genetic literacy, empowering communities to understand better and address health challenges.

HuGAA’s mission centers on educating the public about human genetic diseases and fostering community support for those affected. By working closely with healthcare professionals and the public, the organization aims to enhance health outcomes and foster a more informed society. Ndure’s vision for global health advancement is rooted in her expertise and passion for genetic literacy, which she sees as a cornerstone of modern healthcare.

Donating uniforms is a practical yet impactful gesture. It addresses a tangible need while symbolizing solidarity with the healthcare workers of The Gambia. Properly equipped staff can work more confidently and efficiently, benefiting patients and communities. The initiative also highlights the power of international partnerships, as seen in the connection with Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital, which facilitated the donation.

As HuGAA continues its work, this contribution sets a precedent for how targeted support can strengthen healthcare systems in resource-constrained settings. The organization’s efforts demonstrate that collaboration, community engagement, and a focus on education can drive meaningful change.

Healthcare workers across The Gambia will use the new uniforms in the coming weeks. This will be a visible reminder of HuGAA’s commitment to supporting those on the front lines of care. With plans for further outreach and education, HuGAA is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a healthier, more informed future for The Gambia.
