The United Democratic Party (UDP) of The Gambia ignited the spirit of its global supporters at its 2nd Diaspora Convention held in Seattle, Washington, on Saturday, August 2, 2025. The event, a vibrant display of unity and political determination, drew party faithful from across North America, raising over $111,000 in contributions and pledges to fuel the party’s campaign efforts ahead of the 2026 Presidential Elections.

The convention, a blend of political rally and fundraising drive, showcased the UDP’s growing influence and organizational strength in the diaspora. Party Leader and Secretary General, His Excellency Lawyer Ousainu Darboe, headlined the event, joined by prominent figures including the Mayor of Kanifing Municipality, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, and the Chairman of the Mansakonko Area Council in the Lower River Region, Landing B. Sanneh UDP Minority leader in Parliament, Alagie Darboe, as well as senior UDP leaders in Hon. Momodou Sanneh and Lamin Sanneh. Their presence underscored the party’s commitment to rallying its supporters both at home and abroad.

H.E. Darboe, in a stirring address, lauded the diaspora’s unwavering support, describing their contributions as a cornerstone of the UDP’s vision for a democratic and prosperous Gambia. “Your commitment is not only appreciated—it is inspiring,” Darboe declared. “This support sends a strong signal that the UDP is not just a national force, but a global movement committed to democratic progress and national development.” His words resonated with the audience, many of whom traveled from across the United States and Canada to attend.

The event’s fundraising success highlighted the financial and moral backing of Gambians abroad. Over $111,000 was raised through direct contributions and pledges, funds earmarked for critical party operations, including logistics, grassroots outreach, and campaign activities. A UDP official emphasized the strategic importance of the diaspora’s role, stating, “This is just one of several fundraising events planned by the party—both in the diaspora and within The Gambia—as we prepare for 2026.” The official noted that the Seattle convention’s success would bolster the party’s ability to mobilize voters and expand its reach in the lead-up to the elections.

Mayor Bensouda and Chairman Sanneh delivered equally compelling speeches, praising the diaspora’s organizational prowess and urging continued engagement. Bensouda, known for his dynamic leadership in Kanifing, called on supporters to sustain their momentum, emphasizing the importance of a united front as the UDP prepares to challenge for the presidency. Sanneh echoed this sentiment, highlighting the diaspora’s role in amplifying the party’s message of inclusive governance and national development.

The Seattle convention was more than a fundraising triumph; it was a testament to the UDP’s global network and the confidence its supporters have in its leadership. The event featured cultural performances, policy discussions, and networking sessions, fostering a sense of community among attendees. For many, it was an opportunity to reconnect with their roots while contributing to The Gambia’s political future.

As the 2026 elections approach, the UDP is positioning itself as a formidable and forward-looking force. The party’s ability to mobilize significant resources and rally its diaspora underscores its ambition to lead The Gambia toward a future defined by democratic values and inclusive growth. With more events planned in the coming months, both in The Gambia and internationally, the UDP is intensifying its efforts to build a robust campaign infrastructure.

The success of the Seattle convention sends a clear message: the UDP is not only a national political powerhouse but a global movement with the support and resources to shape The Gambia’s future. As the countdown to 2026 continues, the party’s diaspora remains a vital pillar in its quest for electoral victory and transformative change.
