‘My children are starving’: Hunger in Gaza amid Israel’s blockade

We have been reporting on the starvation crisis in Gaza amid Israel’s ongoing siege.

The UN says one in every five children in Gaza is malnourished. Tens of thousands of Palestinians queue to get a plate of food, and sometimes that’s their only meal of the day.

“I came at 6am to the charity kitchen to get food for my children, and if I don’t get any now, I have to come back in the evening for another chance,” Zeinab Nabahan, a displaced Palestinian from Jabalia refugee camp, told Al Jazeera.

“My children are starving on the small amounts of lentils or rice. My children haven’t had bread or any breakfast. They’ve been waiting for me to leave with whatever I can get from the charity kitchen.”

Another resident, Tayseer Naim, said that had it not been for “God and charity kitchens”, he would have starved to death.

“We come here at 8am and suffer to get lentils or rice. We suffer a lot, and we leave at midday and walk for about a kilometre (0.6 miles),” he told Al Jazeera.

Government Media Office in Gaza: Israel continues its policy of starvation

Israel deliberately starves people in Gaza as it continues to prevent the entry of basic food products into the enclave, a statement by the Office says.

The statement on Telegram said Israel continues to implement “a systematic policy of engineered starvation and slow killing against more than 2.4 million people in Gaza, including more than 1.2 million Palestinian children, in a complete crime of genocide”.

It stressed that the biggest victims of the crime are children and sick people.

“More than 40,000 infants (under one year old) are suffering severe malnutrition, and their lives are threatened by gradual death,” the statement said, adding that more than 100,000 children and patients are also in the same situation.

It underlined that Israel – despite international condemnation – continues to prevent the entry into the enclave of baby formula, nutritional supplements, and hundreds of other essential items, including frozen meat, fish, cheese, dairy products, and frozen fruits and vegetables.

Israeli attack kills four in southern Gaza

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting that at least four people have been killed following an Israeli attack on tents housing displaced Palestinians west of Khan Younis, according to sources at Nasser Medical Complex.

An unspecified number of people were also injured in the attack, the sources added.

Palestinians flee Zeitoun area in Gaza City amid escalating Israeli attacks

According to our local sources and witnesses in the area, the explosions have not stopped. Artillery shelling continues, and Palestinians are on the move due to intensified air raids and targeted attacks.

The Zeitoun neighbourhood is a very densely populated area, home to many families, including those who have been sheltering there. Residents were surprised when the artillery shelling and the intensive air raids started. Some people stayed. Others started moving.

However, as the violence escalated, many were forced to evacuate – hungry, devastated, and displaced yet again, leaving behind everything they had.

Many Palestinians reported evacuating and fleeing while under artillery shelling and live fire from quadcopters.

Residential homes, government buildings, and public facilities have all been targeted by Israeli forces. This is clearly creating the same scenario that took place in Rafah, Beit Hanoon, and Beit Lahiya, where no place is left untouched in the neighbourhoods.

Hamas slams former Israeli intelligence chief’s ‘genocidal’ remarks

The Palestinian group says former Israeli military intelligence chief  Aharon Haliva’s recent comments are “an explicit admission of the genocidal doctrine” of Israel.

Haliva said: “For every person killed on October 7, 50 Palestinians must die.”

A Hamas statement on Telegram said: “Haliva’s call to kill 50 Palestinians for every Israeli, regardless of whether they are children or women, is a systematic criminal policy.

“The confessions reveal that the occupation’s crimes are the result of high-level decisions and official policy from the political and security leadership of the criminal Nazi entity,” it also said, calling on “the United Nations and international courts to document these confessions”.

Israel’s Channel 12 aired leaked recordings of Haliva making this statement. He added that this killing was “necessary for future generations”.

He went on to say that “they need a Nakba every now and then to feel the price,” referring to the violent ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948 by Zionist militias.

Haliva can be heard insisting that the killings are “not revenge”, but rather a “deterrent to future generations”.
