As the United Democratic Party (UDP) flagbearer selection process intensifies, party leader and Secretary General ANM Ousainu Darboe has called for unity and calm among members and supporters. In an address, Darboe urged party faithful to trust the UDP’s democratic process and refrain from divisive attacks as the race to select the party’s presidential candidate for the December 2026 election unfolds.
Darboe congratulated fellow candidates for their commitment to the party and the nation, emphasizing the UDP’s proud democratic credentials. “Our party has a mature constitution and robust institutions that have stood the test of time,” he said, encouraging members to “chill out and relax” and allow the selection process to reach its conclusion.
Highlighting the need to end internal conflicts, Darboe stressed tolerance and respect for differing views within the party. “We need to stop the attacks on each other. We need to stop being divisive,” he declared, noting that robust debates have always been part of the UDP’s strength, leading to stronger consensus and decisions.
Looking ahead, Darboe called for unity to prepare for a formidable campaign against what he described as the “incompetence and corruption” of the Barrow government. He urged UDP members to come together and rally Gambians from all walks of life to “save Gambia from falling off the cliff.”
