In a solemn address to the nation on Monday, President Adama Barrow called for unity and peaceful dialogue following the recent protests over the tragic death in police custody of Omar Badjie in Mandinary. The broadcast, delivered with a tone of empathy and resolve by Barrow, said his government is committed to democratic principles while condemning violence and destruction.

President Barrow began by expressing deep sorrow for the unrest, specifically mourning the loss of Omar Badjie, a citizen whose death has shaken the nation. “Every life lost is a loss for our entire nation, and each injury is a reminder of the preciousness of peace,” he said, extending condolences to Badjie’s family and pledging state support for all affected. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured citizens and law enforcement officers, acknowledging the sacrifices made by the security forces.

The President reaffirmed The Gambia’s dedication to democracy, emphasizing that the right to peaceful protest is enshrined in the Constitution and respected by his administration. However, he firmly stated that violence, property destruction, and threats to public safety undermine these freedoms and will face legal consequences. “Violence will be addressed firmly by law,” Barrow declared, urging citizens to channel grievances through lawful and constructive means.

In a direct appeal to the nation’s youth, whom he described as “the heart and hope of this country,” Barrow assured them that their voices are heard and their aspirations are central to his government’s agenda. He encouraged dialogue through established institutions and youth platforms, reiterating his administration’s openness to resolving concerns peacefully. “Your voices matter,” he said, emphasizing the importance of collaboration to address national challenges.

Barrow warned against a “small minority” exploiting protests for personal or political gain, urging Gambians to reject division and incitement. “Let us not allow our unity or progress to be derailed,” he said, stressing the government’s vigilance in protecting lawful rights while holding those who incite violence accountable, in line with due process and human rights standards.

The President also addressed the security forces, calling for professionalism, restraint, and respect for citizens’ rights. He urged them to uphold the Constitution and maintain public order in a manner that preserves public trust. “Act with wisdom,” he advised, recognizing their critical role in safeguarding the nation.

In closing, Barrow called on all Gambians to reaffirm their shared responsibility for peace, stability, and development. He highlighted the role of democratic institutions—such as the National Assembly, courts, and civil society—as channels for addressing grievances. “Let us use them and reject any path that leads to disorder and harm,” he said, envisioning a united Gambia built on mutual respect and national values.

“Only together, through peaceful engagement and shared responsibility, will we build the Gambia of our dreams,” Barrow concluded, invoking blessings for the nation’s peace and progress. The address, delivered amid heightened tensions, seeks to chart a path toward reconciliation and stability as The Gambia navigates this challenging moment.
