Ousainou Darboe, leader of The Gambia’s United Democratic Party (UDP), declared the 2026 presidential election a pivotal moment to eradicate widespread corruption and end President Barrow’s misrule.

On Saturday night at a fundraising event in Barcelona, Spain, Darboe rallied supporters with promises of transformative governance, earning a heroic welcome from the Gambian diaspora at the UDP Diaspora Congress in Barcelona.

Darboe, unanimously selected as the UDP’s flagbearer for the December 2025 election, outlined bold reforms to reshape The Gambia’s future. He pledged to introduce a new constitution granting Gambians abroad the right to vote and representation in the National Assembly to strengthen diaspora engagement. “The diaspora is a vital part of our nation, and their voices must be heard,” Darboe told the crowd.

The UDP leader also targeted wasteful government spending, criticizing President Adama Barrow’s frequent use of private jets for official travel. “Millions are squandered on luxury flights when commercial airlines suffice at a fraction of the cost,” he said, emphasizing fiscal discipline with the proverb, “Cut your coat according to your size.” Darboe vowed to redirect such funds to bolster the national healthcare system and essential services, prioritizing the needs of ordinary Gambians.

Further addressing economic challenges, Darboe promised to curb excessive government expenditure and channel resources into critical sectors like agriculture. He also committed to ending the practice of allocating utility vehicles to families of senior officials, redirecting those funds to improve public services. “Gambians deserve a leader who is empathetic and responsible,” he said, positioning himself as a champion of accountability.

The enthusiastic Barcelona crowd, energized by Darboe’s vision, signaled strong diaspora support for the UDP’s campaign. Visibly confident, Darboe gestured dramatically to symbolize President Barrow’s anticipated electoral defeat, galvanizing supporters for the upcoming showdown.

The UDP Diaspora Congress underscores the party’s growing momentum as it mobilizes Gambians at home and abroad. With corruption and governance at the forefront of the 2026 election, Darboe’s pledges resonate with voters seeking change.

As the election nears, his call for fiscal responsibility and inclusive reforms sets the stage for a fiercely contested race against Barrow’s administration.
