ActionAid International, The Gambia, has announced the appointment of renowned human rights and climate justice advocate Muhammed Lamin Saidykhan as the second Gambian to join the ActionAid International Board of Directors, marking a landmark achievement for Gambian leadership and African solidarity.
Saidykhan, a lifelong champion for marginalised communities, brings decades of grassroots and global experience to the international board. His journey began with community service through the Gambian Red Cross and has since evolved into influential roles advancing women’s rights, youth empowerment, rural development, and climate justice across Africa and beyond.
Currently serving as Head of the Building Power Department at Climate Action Network International, Saidykhan oversees movement-building efforts in over 150 countries, strengthening grassroots organisations while maintaining deep ties to his Gambian roots.
In The Gambia, he has been instrumental in ActionAid’s growth, chairing the Board Fundraising and Resource Mobilisation Committee and driving high-impact programmes. His pan-African contributions include co-founding Activista global networks, establishing the Rural Women Assembly in The Gambia, coordinating Africans Rising for Unity, Justice, Peace & Dignity, and leading the landmark Women to Kilimanjaro climb to champion women’s land rights.
Reacting to the appointment, Saidykhan said: “I am deeply honored and truly grateful for the appointment to the ActionAid International Board. This will definitely strengthen my steadfast commitment to serving underprivileged people and their communities worldwide. Through strategic advice, AAI has continued to transform and improve the lives of those living in extreme poverty and inequality. I thank ActionAid International, The Gambia, for the support, confidence, and recommendation. My family and the activist groups I work with around the world will surely meet their expectations in fulfilling our duties on the AAI Board.”
Saidykhan also played a pivotal role in civic mobilisation that supported The Gambia’s democratic transition, cementing his reputation as a catalyst for change.
Recognised among the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) Under 40 and as a leading Pan-African Advocate, Saidykhan is celebrated not only for his achievements but for his humility and unwavering belief in collective action.
ActionAid International, The Gambia, hailed the appointment as a proud moment for the nation and the continent, stating that Saidykhan’s leadership “embodies Gambian excellence, African solidarity, and the power of united communities in building a just world.”
His elevation to the global board underscores a growing recognition of African voices in shaping international development and justice agendas.
