A fire erupted today at the Pediatrics Hall of Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH), the country’s largest and leading tertiary referral facility, prompting the swift evacuation of vulnerable pediatric wards—but fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries.
The blaze, which occurred early Thursday morning, led hospital authorities to immediately evacuate the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Pediatrics Emergency Ward, and the Pediatrics Surgery Ward as a precautionary measure. Hospital management emphasized that patient and staff safety remained their top priority throughout the response.
In an official public notice issued by Dr. Mustapha Bittaye, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of EFSTH, the hospital confirmed that all evacuated patients and staff members were accounted for and safe. “We are thankful to Almighty God to report that there has been no casualty from this incident,” the statement read. “All patients and staff in the affected areas are safe and accounted for.”
The Gambia Fire and Rescue Services responded promptly to the scene and remain on-site to secure the area and ensure the fire is fully contained. Hospital engineering and facilities teams have begun assessing the extent of the damage to determine next steps for repairs.
To maintain uninterrupted care for young patients, EFSTH has activated contingency plans, temporarily relocating services to its newly refurbished wards. Officials assured the public that essential pediatric care continues in a safe and secure environment while a long-term solution is developed.
Dr. Bittaye extended heartfelt thanks to the hospital’s dedicated staff, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel, and all emergency responders for their swift and professional actions, which prevented any loss of life or harm. “Their bravery and quick response were instrumental in managing the situation effectively,” he stated.
The incident has sparked concern among families and the broader community in Banjul, where EFSTH serves as a critical healthcare hub for The Gambia. Hospital authorities pledged to provide further updates as investigations and recovery efforts progress.
EFSTH, formerly known as the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital until 2013, is affiliated with the University of the Gambia and plays a central role in medical training and specialized care nationwide. Today’s event underscores the importance of robust fire safety measures in healthcare facilities, particularly those serving infants and children.
