The Government of The Gambia has called on its citizens living in Spain to actively participate in a newly launched Spanish regularization programme that could grant legal status to approximately 500,000 undocumented migrants residing in the country.
In an official statement issued today, the Gambian authorities, through the foreign affairs ministry, described the initiative—formally approved by the Spanish cabinet through a royal decree in late January—as a “significant opportunity” for eligible Gambians to secure lawful residence, gain access to formal employment, and achieve fuller integration into Spanish society.
Under the programme’s criteria, applicants must demonstrate continuous physical presence in Spain for at least five months before December 31, 2025, and maintain a clean criminal record. Those approved will receive an initial one-year residence and work permit, which can be renewed and potentially lead to longer-term or permanent status. Family reunification provisions allow spouses and dependent children to apply jointly.
The application window is expected to open in early April 2026 and remain open until June 30, 2026. Spanish Migration Minister Elma Saiz has promoted the measure as an economically beneficial step that recognises the contributions of irregular migrants in key sectors such as agriculture, domestic care, hospitality, and construction.
The Gambian government pledged full consular assistance, promising to supply the required identity documents and other supporting paperwork to facilitate the process for its nationals. It also reiterated its long-standing appeal for Gambians abroad to uphold the laws of their host countries, behave as exemplary representatives of The Gambia, and continue supporting national development efforts from the diaspora.
Expressing gratitude to the Kingdom of Spain, the statement described the policy as a “true win-win” benefiting migrants, host communities, and countries of origin alike.
The announcement arrives amid sustained advocacy in Spain for broader regularization pathways. It reflects a pragmatic shift in European migration policy at a time when many nations are tightening border controls.
