In a significant development in the country’s political landscape, the Gambia For All (GFA) party of veteran leader Bakary Bunja Dabo and the Patriotic Progressive Alliance (PPA) movement of Dr. Ousman Gajigo have announced their merger into a single entity under the Gambia For All (GFA) banner. The merger, finalized after successful discussions, aims to consolidate opposition strength in preparation for the upcoming 2026 presidential elections.

According to a statement issued by GFA, the decision was reached unanimously by the relevant organs of both groups on January 31, 2026. The statement emphasized their shared perspectives on the nation’s major challenges, including three decades of poor governance marked by misrule, resource mismanagement, and widespread corruption. These issues, the release argued, have resulted in a weakened state with dysfunctional institutions and incompetence across public affairs management.

The newly unified GFA committed to rebuilding The Gambia’s governance structures, starting with the adoption of a new constitution to establish a vibrant democracy. Key priorities include achieving greater balance among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches; enhancing judicial services and access to justice; and implementing electoral reforms to boost transparency and fairness.

The alliance also pledged to modernize the civil service, revitalize the national economy to boost output, and prioritize funding for social services, with a particular focus on women’s and youth empowerment.

Described as an “important building block” in broader efforts to unite opposition parties, the merger positions GFA as a stronger contender against the ruling party. It reflects growing momentum among opposition forces to present a formidable, united front capable of driving meaningful change in the West African nation.

The alliance, according to both parties, underscored the supreme national interest guiding the fusion and called on conscious citizens to support the initiative for a renewed Gambia.

This consolidation comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the December 2026 polls, as various groups seek to address longstanding grievances and offer alternative visions for governance and development.
