At least 100 young people from the Central River Region (CRR) North and South converged at the Janjangbureh Area Council premises for a high-level dialogue with local authorities, pressing for a dedicated 5% inclusive allocation of council funds to youth development initiatives.
Organized by ActionAid The Gambia under the theme “Advancing Youth Development Funding Dialogue on 5% Allocations”, the event provided a platform for marginalized youth to voice concerns, demand accountability, and advocate for their active inclusion in local governance and infrastructure projects aimed at fostering lasting peace and community progress.
Participants engaged in frank discussions with officials, including the Chairman of the Janjangbureh Area Council, to share regional challenges and emphasize the need for targeted youth empowerment programs. The advocacy aligns with broader national efforts—supported by ActionAid and partners—to secure earmarked portions (often 5% of the 60% community development revenue) for youth-focused interventions across Gambian local councils.

Amina Gaye, a passionate youth participant, underscored the event’s significance: “This is a vital step towards advancing youth development. Since youths make up about 75% of the population, involving us in development decisions is crucial. If each district or community is to thrive, young people must be at the forefront.” She called for sustained support, expressing hope for “more backing from the area councils and stronger connections with our partners.”
Governor of the Central River Region, Honorable Ousman Bah, commended the initiative and encouraged greater youth participation: “Participate actively in activities like these, and make the most of what is shared.”
Youth representative Tata Jobe reinforced the message: “Community progress cannot be achieved without involving youth, who are the future leaders of our region.”
The dialogue forms part of ongoing advocacy in CRR and beyond, with similar engagements yielding commitments in other areas. The initiative is expected to expand further in CRR North, including planned sessions with youth and leaders at the Kuntaur Area Council to maintain momentum and drive concrete policy changes for youth inclusion.
