The Namie Foundation has named veteran educator Mrs. Therese Cardos (née Gomez) as the recipient of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Gambia Teacher Prize 3.0 (2026) Gala Dinner, scheduled for 9th April.

The announcement recognises Mrs. Cardos’ nearly five decades of unwavering dedication to the teaching profession and her significant contributions to education and national development in The Gambia.

Mrs. Cardos began her illustrious career after obtaining her Qualified Teacher’s Certificate in 1976. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, further sharpening her expertise in the field.

Throughout her long service, she has excelled in critical areas such as teacher training, guidance and counselling, and Family Life Education. Her work has not only strengthened The Gambia’s educational systems but has also supported broader community development initiatives across the country.

Her professional journey has taken her far beyond national borders, with training and exposure opportunities spanning Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia. Despite her extensive international experience, Mrs. Cardos has remained deeply committed to serving her nation, consistently channeling her knowledge and skills to improve educational standards at home.

Reacting to the announcement, a visibly moved Mrs. Cardos expressed profound gratitude and surprise at the honour.

“First, I thank God for my life and the abundant blessings He continues to grant my loved ones and me to witness this award,” she said. She extended heartfelt appreciation to the Namie Foundation and the selection committee for what she described as a unanimous and deeply meaningful recognition of her lifelong work.

Looking back on her career, Mrs. Cardos described the journey as “bittersweet,” filled with challenges that tested her resilience but ultimately reinforced her passion for education.

“This award serves as a powerful affirmation of years of dedication, hard work, loyalty, and passion,” she reflected. “It is a true testimony that my humble efforts have not gone unnoticed.”

She paid tribute to all those who supported her along the way and expressed excitement for the upcoming gala, calling the recognition both emotional and fulfilling. Drawing on popular wisdom, she emphasised the virtues of patience and perseverance, noting that long journeys of commitment often culminate in meaningful rewards.

The Gambia Teacher Prize 3.0 aims to celebrate outstanding individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the education sector in The Gambia. The Lifetime Achievement Award, in particular, honours those whose sustained impact has helped shape the nation’s educational landscape over many years.

Mrs. Cardos’s selection underscores the importance of recognising veteran educators whose quiet, consistent service has laid the foundation for future generations.

The Gala Dinner on 9th April promises to be a memorable evening of celebration, reflection, and renewed commitment to the noble profession of teaching.
