Prominent Gambian anti-corruption activist and citizen journalist Kemessang Sanneh, popularly known as Kexx Sanneh, remains in police custody following his arrest over allegations of a sexual offense involving a minor.
The Edward Francis Small Center for Rights and Justice (EFSCRJ) and the Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA) have issued statements calling for due process, calm, and respect for the rule of law as investigations continue.
EFSCRJ acknowledged Kexx Sanneh’s public profile as a vocal anti-corruption activist and court reporter but stressed that the case must be handled primarily through the lens of rights, dignity, and justice—especially for the young mother and the innocent child involved.
The human rights organization urged the Gambia Police Force to conduct a thorough, impartial, and professional investigation grounded in due process and human rights standards. It called on the media and the public to exercise restraint, protect the survivor’s dignity and privacy, and refrain from stigmatization, victim-blaming, or discrimination. Particular emphasis was placed on shielding the welfare and future of the child from harm and public exposure.
EFSCRJ equally underscored that the accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence and all due legal protections, and should not be subjected to hostility or prejudice. The group urged police to pursue justice with both professionalism and expedition in this sensitive matter. It pledged to continue monitoring developments and advocating for accountability and the integrity of the justice system.
In a separate press release, GALA described Kexx Sanneh as a “comrade” and confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation. The organization encouraged that due process be strictly followed, allowing relevant authorities to establish the facts without interference.
GALA urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while the matter is under investigation.
The police have confirmed that Kexx Sanneh is in custody at Kairaba Police Station in connection with the alleged sexual offense involving a 17-year-old student, who has since given birth. No formal charges have been announced yet.
Both organizations emphasized the importance of upholding the rights, dignity, and due process of all parties involved as the case proceeds.
