The Ministry of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines has announced an upward adjustment in fuel prices for May 2026, citing rising international petroleum costs driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
According to an official statement released late Thursday, the new pump prices are as follows: Petrol (PMS): D112.00 per liter; Gasoil (AGO): D120.00 per liter; and Jet Fuel (Kero): D133.72 per liter.
The ministry explained that the increases follow the latest monthly review of global market conditions, with Platt’s prices rising due to ongoing supply chain and logistics disruptions.
Recognizing the potential strain on households, businesses, and the broader economy, the government has moved to cushion the impact. It announced an additional subsidy of D185,005,626.00 for May 2026, bringing the combined subsidy for April and May to over D500 million.
Further relief measures include reductions in depot throughput charges, importer margins, and the fuel marking levy.
While welcoming these interventions, the ministry acknowledged that such high levels of subsidy are unsustainable, as they place significant pressure on public finances and limit investment in critical sectors such as health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure.
“The Gambia is not alone in facing these challenges,” the statement noted. “Several countries across the sub-region and globally are experiencing similar pressures in their petroleum sectors.”
The Ministry assured citizens that fuel pricing adjustments are based on transparent reviews of international market trends and domestic economic realities, and it remains committed to safeguarding national energy security while mitigating the effects of global volatility on ordinary Gambians.
This marks the latest in a series of fuel price reviews as The Gambia continues to navigate fluctuating global oil markets.
