Gambian President Adama Barrow and Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between The Gambia and Guinea, with both leaders pledging deeper cooperation in energy, infrastructure, security, transportation, culture and other areas of mutual interest.
President Barrow was received by President Doumbouya at the Mohammed V Palace in Conakry on Wednesday during an official visit to reinforce the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two West African nations.
Following official ceremonial honors, the two leaders held a private meeting focused on relations between Banjul and Conakry and explored opportunities to expand cooperation across several strategic sectors.
According to an official account of the meeting, the two presidents reaffirmed the historic and people-to-people ties between Gambians and Guineans. They stressed the importance of translating those relations into concrete initiatives that promote economic development and improve the lives of their citizens.
President Doumbouya said the relationship between Guinea and The Gambia extends beyond geographical proximity, pointing to shared history, values, and bonds of fraternity as a strong foundation for deeper cooperation.
President Barrow, meanwhile, expressed appreciation for the reception accorded to him and his delegation and thanked his Guinean counterpart for responding positively to his initiative to hold the high-level meeting in Conakry.
Following the talks, the foreign ministers of the two countries presented a joint communiqué outlining the major issues discussed by the leaders.
The discussions covered bilateral relations, the welfare and situation of citizens of both countries, regional integration, and peace and stability within the West African sub-region.
Economic cooperation also featured prominently, with both governments expressing interest in exploring new opportunities, particularly in the energy sector, and developing mutually beneficial partnerships.
Officials from the diplomatic, energy and mining sectors, alongside senior civilian and military officials, participated in the delegations, underscoring the two governments’ intention to broaden and diversify their bilateral engagement.
On regional affairs, Presidents Barrow and Doumbouya reaffirmed their commitment to regional integration and efforts to strengthen peace and stability.
The two leaders agreed to maintain regular consultations and diplomatic exchanges as part of efforts to deepen the friendship between Banjul and Conakry.
During the meeting, President Barrow formally invited President Doumbouya to visit The Gambia. The Guinean leader accepted the invitation, with the date expected to be determined later through diplomatic channels.
A joint communiqué prepared in both English and French was subsequently signed by representatives of the two countries, formalizing the outcome of the talks. President Barrow and his delegation departed Conakry later Wednesday following the official visit.
The talks mark a renewed push by Banjul and Conakry to strengthen their relationship through closer political, economic and regional cooperation while building on the longstanding historical and cultural ties between the peoples of The Gambia and Guinea.
