Court says Neneh Freda Gomez, others arrest &detention unlawful

A high court in Banjul has ruled that the arrest and detention of Neneh Freda Gomez, the country coordinator of Home Of Medical Missions (HOMM), Gilbert Manga, a Fatu Network cameraman and Lamin Sey was unlawful ordering for their unconditional release of the allegations.

The judge, B.A Bakri also ordered the respondents, the Attorney General, Landing Bojang, Inspector General of Police, Hamadi Bah and Amodu Drammeh to pay a compensation of D100,000 to Nenneh, Manga and Sey.

A cost of D20,000 has also been awarded as cost of the action against the respondents’.

The applicants filed a suit at the high court complex at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court that the actions of the respondents were unlawful and unconstitutional asking the court to make an ordered for them to be compensated one million dalasi. They also alleged that they were forcefully taken against their wish and kept at the police station first at Senegambia and later detained at Kairaba police from 11am till 7pm because they sought to protect the property allegedly belonging to them.

Delivering his ruling, the judge held that he have no hesitation in granting the request sought by the applicants.

“The arrest of Nenneh Freda Gomez, Gilbert Manga and Lamin Sey initiated/caused by the respondents on Monday 11th October, 2021 at Bijilo is unlawful and inconsistent with and /or contravention of the Constitution of The Gambia,” he said.

Nenneh Freda Gomez is the country co-ordinator of Home of Medical Mission, a trustee for global HOMM, a non-governmental humanitarian organization with its head office located in Virginia in the United States

Mr. Marenah is known for covering some of the most critical stories during the former and current administrations, including high-profile treason cases involving former military chiefs from 2009 to 2012. After his arrest and imprisonment by the previous regime of President Yahya Jammeh in 2014, he relocated to Dakar, Senegal, where he continues to work as a freelance journalist for various local and international media organizations, including the BBC, Al Jazeera, VOA, and ZDF TV in Germany. He is also a co-founder of the Banjul-based Media Center for Research and Development, an institution dedicated to research and development initiatives.
