Gambia Action Party (GAP) flagbearer Basamba Drammeh has withdrawn from the December 5, 2026 presidential election and thrown his support behind United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainou Darboe. The decision, announced less than 12 hours before he was due to submit his nomination papers to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), marks a notable realignment in the opposition camp.

Speaking to journalists and supporters, Drammeh said his choice stemmed from a shared vision for the country and his conviction that opposition unity offers the best path to tackling The Gambia’s persistent challenges. He expressed gratitude to those who had backed his own presidential bid, noting that they deserved a clear explanation for his decision to step aside.

“I believe that united we can do more for The Gambia,” he said, framing the move as an effort to combine strengths in the service of national development. He identified infrastructure, reliable electricity, education, agriculture and tourism as priority areas that require urgent attention. Improved roads and a stable power supply, he argued, are essential to support farmers, businesses and investors, while expanded opportunities are needed to keep young people employed at home rather than seeking work abroad.

On agriculture, Drammeh called for greater investment in the production, processing and marketing of local crops such as rice, groundnuts and vegetables. He specifically urged stronger support for farmers in the Central River Region so they can earn a decent living from their land. He also appealed to Gambians in the diaspora to return with their skills and experience, stressing that the country must create an enabling environment for their contribution.

Beyond economic issues, Drammeh issued a direct appeal for national unity and an end to tribal and political divisions, while voicing concern over corruption. “No more division. Whatever our tribes, we are all Gambians. There is only one Gambia. This country is ours. Let us take care of it together,” he declared. He further insisted that the nation deserves better leadership than it currently has and urged his former supporters to join him in backing Darboe.

“Enough is enough. The Gambia deserves better than what we have now,” he said. Drammeh’s withdrawal adds to the series of political realignments taking shape in the final weeks before the 2026 presidential vote.
