Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay (FJC), former Speaker of the National Assembly and current Gambian Ambassador to South Africa, is at the center of a growing controversy following the leak of an audio recording in which she harshly criticizes the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) and several prominent activists. The remarks, which have gone viral on social media, have sparked widespread condemnation and raised questions about the conduct of a senior diplomat.

In the leaked audio, FJC allegedly accuses the UDP of undermining national interests and disparages activists, including Essa Mbye Faal, Pa Samba Jaw, and Juka Ceesay, claiming they are orchestrating politically motivated campaigns. The Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), a nationalist movement, swiftly denounced her comments, labeling them “defamatory” and “unfounded.” GALA stated that FJC’s allegations of opposition funding are baseless and constitute an attack on their integrity.

The audio has ignited a firestorm online, with many Gambians expressing outrage over FJC’s remarks. Critics argue that her statements are unbecoming of a diplomat, whose role demands impartiality and professionalism. “A senior public official should uphold unity, not sow division,” one social media user said. Others have called for her to issue a public apology or face disciplinary action, citing her history of controversial statements, including a 2021 leaked audio where she insulted former president Yahya Jammeh.

FJC’s comments also come amid ongoing legal scrutiny. In 2024, the UDP challenged her appointment as ambassador, arguing it violated constitutional provisions due to her alleged ties to the Alliance for Patriotic Re-Orientation and Construction (APRC). Though the Supreme Court dismissed the case, citing insufficient evidence, the controversy has resurfaced with this latest incident.

GALA has demanded an immediate retraction and apology from FJC, threatening legal action if it fails to comply. The group emphasized its commitment to transparency and youth empowerment, vowing not to be deterred by “slander or political intimidation.” As pressure mounts, the incident underscores the delicate balance diplomats must maintain in politically charged environments.
