As Africa commemorates Africa Liberation Day on May 25, 2025, the Alcohol Policy Alliance Gambia (APAG) has issued a stark warning about the escalating crisis of excessive and unregulated alcohol consumption across the continent. The organization highlighted the profound social, economic, and health challenges fueled by alcohol misuse, calling for urgent action to address its devastating impacts.

In a statement shared with The Alkamba Times (TAT), APAG emphasized that unchecked alcohol consumption is driving a surge in crime, violence, and social instability. “Alcohol-related offenses are on the rise, contributing significantly to domestic abuse, road accidents, and gender-based violence, which undermine the safety and dignity of our people, especially women and children,” the statement read. APAG Chairman Alagie Janneh signed the release, underscoring the issue’s urgency.

The organization pointed to the broader consequences of alcohol misuse, noting its strain on development efforts. Resources are being diverted to treat preventable injuries and alcohol-related illnesses, leading to reduced productivity and economic stagnation. APAG also highlighted the alarming link between harmful drinking practices and rising maternal mortality rates, with pregnant women facing heightened health risks due to exposure to unsafe alcohol consumption.

APAG’s call to action comes as African leaders and communities reflect on the continent’s progress and challenges during Africa Liberation Day. The organization urged governments, civil society, health institutions, and citizens to prioritize stronger public policies and regulations on alcohol production, distribution, and marketing. It also advocated for community-based awareness and prevention programs to curb the growing crisis.

“The harmful use of alcohol is a barrier to building a healthier, safer, and more prosperous Africa,” APAG stated. “As we commemorate African Day, let us take collective action to curb the harmful use of alcohol and build a future where health, safety, and human dignity prevail across our continent.”

The organization’s appeal resonates amid growing concerns about alcohol’s role in undermining social cohesion and development goals. APAG emphasized that collaborative efforts are essential to reverse these trends and foster a healthier Africa. “Together for a healthier Africa,” Janneh concluded, urging stakeholders to unite in addressing this pressing public health challenge.

With alcohol-related issues casting a shadow over the continent’s progress, APAG’s message serves as a rallying cry for African nations to strengthen their resolve and policies to safeguard their communities.
