Dr. Heather Armstrong, Chief Executive Officer of the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (GHDT) has been named among distinguished academics, scientists, artists, and others to be honored with the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by King Charles during his forthcoming birthday celebration. The veteran Gambian animal welfare advocate will receive the prestigious award on November 14, 2025, at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her transformative contributions to animal welfare in The Gambia and beyond.

Dr. Armstrong, the biological daughter of Bruwer, a pioneer in Gambian conservation, has dedicated decades to improving the lives of animals and the communities that depend on them. Her work through GHDT has focused on community development, education, health, and animal welfare, creating a lasting impact across The Gambia. The MBE acknowledges her leadership and unwavering commitment to these causes.

In a heartfelt response to the announcement, Dr. Armstrong emphasized that the award honors the collective efforts of her team at GHDT. “The award is for my work in The Gambia, and whilst I am delighted that our work has been recognized, I really feel that it represents the work my team has put in, so I feel it is for us all,” she said. “I am incredibly proud of the staff at GHDT and the fantastic work and treatment they achieve daily. They are the ones who make the magic happen, and we couldn’t do what we do without the fantastic people who support us.”

Dr. Kebba Daffeh, President of the Gambia Veterinary and Medical Association (GVMA), hailed the award as “incredibly well-deserved.” He noted, “This honor is a powerful recognition of Heather’s immense contributions to improving animal welfare and her dedication to enhancing the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable populations who rely on their animals.”

Dr. Daffeh highlighted GHDT’s vital projects, which have empowered communities and shaped a new generation of animal welfare advocates in The Gambia. “Coming from a family of advocates and environmentalists, Heather and her family have truly made The Gambia their second home,” he added.

Andrea Dawson, a retired veterinary surgeon and trustee of GHDT, praised Dr. Armstrong’s tireless dedication since the organization was founded in 2002.

“Heather has worked unpaid for the benefit of the people and animals in The Gambia,” Dawson wrote on GHDT’s Facebook page. “She is eternally optimistic, sees the potential and best in people, and finds it very difficult to walk away from any animal or person that requires assistance. She truly is an inspiration with her compassion.”

Dr. Armstrong’s work has not only improved animal welfare but also uplifted vulnerable communities by providing education and resources to those who rely on working animals, such as horses and donkeys. Her holistic approach, combining empathy for both people and animals, has made GHDT a model for sustainable development. The organization’s initiatives have fostered resilience and hope in rural Gambian communities, earning widespread admiration.

Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Armstrong expressed gratitude for the support that has fueled GHDT’s success. “I am very honored, but I am also very aware that it is due to others that I have it,” she said. Her humility and team-oriented mindset have endeared her to colleagues and supporters alike.

As Dr. Armstrong prepares to accept the MBE, the animal welfare community celebrates her legacy. The award not only recognizes her achievements but also highlights the crucial role of organizations like GHDT in fostering a more compassionate world. For Dr. Armstrong and her team, this honor is a testament to their shared mission and a call to continue their vital work.
