Mali’s transitional government has officially announced the death of Lieutenant General Sadio Camara, Minister of State for Defense and Veterans Affairs, following a deadly terrorist assault on his residence in the early hours of Saturday, April 25, 2026.

In a statement released late Sunday evening, the Ministry of Territorial Administration confirmed that Camara was killed after a suicide bomber drove a car laden with explosives into his home.

The minister reportedly engaged the attackers in a fierce firefight, neutralizing several assailants before sustaining wounds that proved fatal. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries, the government said.

The blast caused the collapse of the residence, which also damaged a nearby mosque and killed several worshippers inside, according to the official dispatch. The attacks, which also erupted in Kidal and Kita, have been described by authorities as “cowardly terrorist” operations.

The news has triggered widespread shock and mourning across Mali and the region. President Assimi Goïta, who leads the transitional government, expressed his “deepest condolences” to Camara’s family, describing the late minister as a dedicated servant of the nation.

Camara’s remains are currently at the Military Engineering Corps in Bamako. A state funeral with full military honors is expected to take place within hours, sources close to the government told The Alkamba Times.

The violence also left two senior military figures injured. General Modibo Koné, Director General of the National Agency for State Security (ANSE), underwent successful surgery at the Pasteur Clinic in Bamako. General Oumar Diarra, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces (CEMGA), is receiving treatment at the military hospital in Kati, where his condition is reported as stable.

Lieutenant General Sadio Camara was a central figure in Mali’s military-led transition, playing a key role in defense policy and counter-terrorism efforts amid ongoing instability in the Sahel. His death comes at a sensitive time for the West African nation, which continues to battle jihadist insurgencies linked to groups such as Al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates.

Security forces are said to be on high alert as the country mourns one of its most prominent military leaders.
