In a powerful display of unity, Senegal’s opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was unanimously elected president of PASTEF-Les Patriotes on Saturday during the party’s historic first Congress.
More than 2,000 supporters and delegates converged on the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center (CICAD) in Diamniadio, with 1,200 accredited delegates casting votes. According to party officials, Sonko secured 100 percent of the votes, confirming his position as the undisputed leader of one of Senegal’s most dynamic political movements.
The election followed extensive deliberations among party leaders and coordinators, who expressed overwhelming confidence in Sonko’s vision and track record. “Party leaders and coordinators expressed their full confidence in President Ousmane Sonko, praising his leadership and his unwavering commitment to PASTEF’s ideals and principles,” a party statement said.
Observers view the unanimous outcome as a strong signal of internal cohesion and strategic continuity within PASTEF, especially as the party positions itself for the upcoming 2027 local elections. Delegates used the Congress to reaffirm their dedication to strengthening the party’s grassroots structures and expanding its national reach under Sonko’s guidance.
“Through this consensus, PASTEF demonstrates its unity and determination to meet the political challenges ahead, while upholding its founding values and ambitions for Senegal,” the official release added.
Sonko’s election comes at a pivotal moment for Senegalese politics. The charismatic leader, who commands significant youth support and has been a vocal advocate for systemic change, is expected to steer the party toward greater institutional organization and electoral readiness.
The Congress not only solidified Sonko’s leadership but also showcased PASTEF’s growing organizational maturity. With delegates from across the country in attendance, the event highlighted the party’s broad base and collective resolve to shape Senegal’s political future.
