Lecturers and other staff at the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET) in The Gambia are facing a delay in the payment of their July 2026 salaries, according to an internal memorandum issued by the university’s management and seen by the Alkamba Times.
The memo, dated 31 July 2026 and signed by Deputy Registrar (Human Resources) Fatuma Abdallah Nantembelele, Ph.D., on behalf of management, informed all staff of the hold-up. It attributed the delay to “ongoing administrative and financial processing matters.”
“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this delay may cause and assure you that every effort is being made to ensure that the salaries are processed and paid as soon as possible,” the memorandum stated. It also urged staff to maintain professionalism, dedication and morale while serving the university community.
The announcement has drawn sharp reactions from affected employees. One staff member expressed frustration over what they described as inconsistent treatment. “I think they should stop playing with our lives. They will push us and force us to submit our exam questions, mark sheets, and other things ASAP, and when it comes to paying our salary, they drag their feet,” the staff member said. “If you ask, they will give you sweet words. These can’t continue. We need to go back to the old drawing board at least on the 24th of every month because we are not different from other institutes that get their salary at the right time.”
A senior lecturer also voiced concern, noting the personal impact of the delay. “We are responsible people and need to take care of families and other problems surrounding us, so keeping our funds means a lot to us, and in fact they are trying to frustrate us by sitting on it. Because the government had sent all the salary to the bank,” the lecturer said.
As of early August 2026, university management has not publicly indicated a specific date for the release of the July salaries. Staff continues to await further updates while carrying out their academic and administrative duties.
