The Gambia U-20 Young Scorpions defeated Sierra Leone 2-0 in the WAFU Zone A Championship semi-final on Sunday, booking a place in Tuesday’s final and automatic qualification for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

The match, played in Bamako, showcased the Young Scorpions’ growing efficiency from set pieces and disciplined game management. After a period of early pressure, Gambia broke the deadlock in the eighth minute when a well-delivered corner found Agibou Dibba unmarked. Dibba’s firm right-footed finish gave the side the lead and set the tone for a controlled performance.

Sierra Leone attempted to respond through their physical midfield, but Gambia’s defense remained solid, extending a strong run that has now produced three clean sheets in four games. The second goal arrived around the half-hour mark. Francis Gomez collected the ball on the right, cut inside two defenders, and drove a low shot past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. The strike effectively ended the contest as a competitive fixture.

Gomez was later named Man of the Match for a complete display that combined attacking threat with tireless defensive work, tracking back, linking play, and leading the press. In a team defined by collective effort, his influence stood out across the full 90 minutes.

Sierra Leone pushed in the second half but failed to create clear chances. Gambia, organized from the back and efficient in possession, managed the game with maturity beyond their years. The result confirmed the Young Scorpions’ status as finalists and, more significantly, secured their return to the continent’s premier youth tournament.

For a nation that has regularly featured at the U-20 World Cup in recent cycles, qualification for the 2027 AFCON in Ghana represents a restoration of standing at the African level. Many in the current squad played school and local football in places such as Sukuta, Brikama, and Banjul only a few years ago. Reaching the WAFU final has turned an underdog campaign, which began with a shaky start, into a platform for the next stage of their development.

The Young Scorpions now face one remaining domestic challenge in the WAFU Zone A final. Regardless of Tuesday’s outcome, they’ve achieved their primary objective. Ghana 2027 awaits.
