The Gambia’s U-20 fairy-tale run ended most cruelly on Friday evening as Guinea edged a tense, nervous WAFU A final 1-0 to be crowned regional champions.

A first-half strike from midfielder Abubakarr Keita in the 39th minute proved decisive at the WAFU A AFCON Qualifiers. Guinea, organized and clinical, scored when it mattered and then defended their lead with total commitment. For the Young Scorpions, the night will be defined by what might have been.

Gambia pressed and fought for the best part of an hour after falling behind. They created half-chances and forced Guinea deep, yet the equalizer never arrived. The defining moment came in the 68th minute. Francis Gomez unleashed a powerful effort that forced Guinea’s goalkeeper into a desperate parry. The rebound fell invitingly to Sheriff Bah with the goal at his mercy. The Gambian bench rose as one, but under intense pressure Bah could not direct his effort on target. A golden opportunity went begging, and Gambia continued to trail 1-0.

That miss encapsulated the final. Guinea did what champions do: they took their chance and protected it. Gambia, for all their endeavor, could not find the breakthrough.

In a powerful statement about this team’s identity, Patrick George was named Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament and collected the Golden Glove. The side that lost the final produced the outstanding shot-stopper in all of WAFU A. Throughout the qualifiers, George has been simply sensational. He was central to Gambia topping their group and surviving in the semi-final. Even in defeat, his reputation grew.

The award offers little consolation in the Bamako dressing room tonight, yet it matters for Gambian football. While Guinea return home with the trophy and a place at the U-20 AFCON as WAFU A champions, the Young Scorpions leave knowing they have found their number one. The safest hands in West Africa belong to a Gambian — Patrick George.

For a young squad that has grown together in Mali, the final was a harsh lesson in fine margins. The memories of Keita’s goal and Bah’s miss will travel with them back to Banjul, but so will the belief forged by a goalkeeper who stood tall when it mattered most.
