Sources have confirmed to Alkamba Times that the arrest and detention of Journalist Fabakary Ceesay is in connection to an article the journalist wrote exposing the clandestine business operations of Emkay Stores owned by Nandu Rajwani, an Indian businessman based in the Gambia.

Ceesay, a human rights Journalist, was called for questioning and detained overnight by the Gambia Police force on Monday.

The Gambia Press Union has confirmed the arrest and detention of the human rights journalist in a brief statement on its Facebook page.

“The GPU Leadership have been able to see journalist Fabakary Ceesay, from where he has been detained in Banjul, and he appeared to have been in good shape. He is neither charged nor released on bail. He was detained overnight. He was arrested in. connection to a complaint filed against him in what appears to be a private legal matter, details of which we couldn’t establish for now.”

However, TAT investigations revealed that the human rights journalist’s arrest is related to the publisher’s recent article on Emkay Stores, a business entity run by Nandu Rajwani, an Indian-based Gambian businessman.

The article captioned “Nandos,” the Guptas of the Gambia, exposes alleged business dealings of the Emkay Stores in connection to the government. It alleged that officials collected thousands of dalasi from the Indian businessman in return for favors for his business.

The article also exposes the connections between Emkay Stores and Gai Construction and Engineering, Contractor of Banjul Roads and Sewage Projects, a project widely believed to be a failed project.

Sources said the arrest and detention of Journalist Fabakary Ceesay come on the heels of a complaint lodged by one Abdou Mboge, Administrative, and Finance officer of Emkay Stores.
