Steve Biko’s sensational player Adama Bojang picked it up from where he stopped at the AFCON by scoring a brace to give The Gambia a bright start to the U20 World Cup, winning 2-1 against Honduras.
The most shoutout young star in the squad, Bojang, opened the scoring just 20′ seconds into the start of the game with a long-range left-footed shot from the area. However, this goal recorded the fourth quickest in the tournament’s history, was made temporal just five minutes before Honduras leveled affairs from their star player Aceituno.
The young Scorpions showed an impressive and dominant performance in the first period of the game, having squandered several goal chances to advance on the scores. They went into the break to commiserate with defender Moses Jarju, who was stretched off injured a few minutes before the interval.
At the restart, the young scorpions maintained their first-half superiority, creating even more chances than they had earlier. Early substitutes Ebrima Singhateh and Mamin Sanyang were close to scoring off the bench but still, the double wait.
More chances in the fight, and it has to be Adama Bojang again to put the AFCON silver medalists ahead with a rebound finish from his header in the 84′ minutes. The young scorpions survived a few moments of relief after the VAR ruled out Honduras’ equalizer for offside, and that was all but enough for the Gambia.
The Gambia got off to a winning start in the 2023 U20 FIFA World Cup, leading their group as they play France in the next three days, who lost to another group member South Korea earlier today.
