In a bid to give back to their former School, former students of the country’s oldest boarding school, Armitage High School, mainly based in the United States, have donated at least 44 school desks from proceeds of the ‘replace your desk’ campaign which was launched a few months to support the School’s educational drive.
‘Replace your Desk and Chair’ is a simple concept initiated by the Armitage class of 1970. The idea was conceived by Abdoulie M. Touray (Baax), who believed that this simple but great concept would go a long way to help fulfill a basic fundamental need without which attaining a quality education would be difficult.
Inspired by the story and gesture to give back to Armitage, all Armitage Alumni students contributed among themselves to raise funds through a Go-Fund-Me campaign and individuals contribution.
Demba Baldeh, a class of 1991 based in Seattle, Washington, spearheaded the Diaspora ex-students’ contributions to ensure funds are raised to support Armitage.
The donation of the 44 desks was delivered to school management on Saturday, July 7, 2023, at the sideline of the Class of 2023 graduation and prize giving Ceremony at the event held at the school grounds in Janjangbureh.
Professor Sillah Conateh, Class of 91, led the presentation while Amie Mbaye Ndow, Chairwoman of the Armitage Board of Directors of Armitage, did the formal handing over.
“I am grateful to all the Alumni who donated to this project. Replacing your Desk is a simple concept but advantageous to students’ learning enhancement. The credit for the idea goes to Abdoulie Touray Baax of Sahel Consulting, a great resourceful brother,” Demba Baldeh told Alkamba Times.
