The Gambia women’s senior national football team, the Scorpions, is poised to make waves at the WAFU Zone A Championship, which will unfold in Nouakchott, Mauritania, from May 18 to May 30, 2025. Drawn into a formidable Group B alongside rivals Senegal, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, the team is intensifying preparations under the guidance of Coach Mariama Sowe, with its sights set on claiming the coveted trophy.

The Scorpions will launch their campaign on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, facing Sierra Leone in a high-stakes opener. They will then lock horns with defending champions Senegal, a perennial powerhouse, before wrapping up the group stage against Guinea. Each match promises to test the team’s mettle, but Coach Sowe exudes confidence. “This is our third appearance in this competition, and we aim to give our best,” she declared. “We won bronze last time, but we’re determined to lift the trophy this year.”

Sowe’s optimism stems from significant strides in the team’s preparation. Unlike previous tournaments, where late arrivals hampered cohesion, this year’s squad has benefited from consistent training. “We have most of our players together daily, which we lacked before,” Sowe noted. “In the past, some joined us only at the venue, making it tough to gel. Now, our focus on unity is stronger than ever.”

The Gambia’s past WAFU Zone A Championship outings have laid a solid foundation for its ambitions. The bronze medal from its last appearance fuels its hunger for greater success. With a blend of seasoned players and emerging talent, the Scorpions are ready to showcase their skill and tenacity in Mauritania.

As the tournament approaches, the team carries the hopes of a nation eager to see them dethrone regional giants. Coach Sowe’s squad is not just playing for a title but to inspire a new generation of Gambian footballers. With improved preparation and unyielding determination, the Scorpions are primed to sting their opponents and etch their name in WAFU history. All eyes will be on Nouakchott as Gambia’s women chase glory.
