Mariama Darboe, a U.S.-based Gambian author, has transformed her academic research into a powerful message of empowerment with her debut children’s book, “Yes, GIRLS Can Be Presidents!” Released this month, the book aims to inspire young readers, particularly girls in The Gambia and across Africa, to dream big and see themselves as future leaders.

The book’s origins lie in Darboe’s academic article, “Madam President? Women and the Presidency: Lessons from Liberia, Tanzania, and Namibia,” published last year. What began as a scholarly exploration evolved into a vibrant children’s story designed to spark ambition and confidence in young minds. “This book is more than just a story,” Darboe said. “It’s a message of possibility, showing children—especially girls—that they can aspire to any role, even the presidency.”

Yes, GIRLS Can Be Presidents delivers a heartfelt narrative that encourages children to envision themselves in leadership roles, breaking down gender barriers through engaging storytelling. The book’s release marks a significant milestone for Darboe, who seeks to amplify Gambian voices in children’s literature. “Too often, school libraries in The Gambia lack books by local authors,” she noted. “I want our children to see their stories and culture reflected on those shelves.”

As part of her mission, Darboe plans to donate 20 copies of the book to 20 primary schools in The Gambia this December. The initiative aims to foster confidence and leadership among young students while increasing access to Gambian-authored literature. “Representation matters,” Darboe emphasized. “I hope these books inspire children to dream boldly and believe in their potential.”

The book is now available for purchase on Amazon (https://a.co/d/aL4H4fE), offering readers worldwide a chance to engage with Darboe’s empowering narrative.

Darboe’s journey from academic researcher to children’s author highlights her commitment to social impact. By blending education with inspiration, she is paving the way for a new generation of leaders. As her book reaches shelves and schools, Darboe’s message is clear: the future is limitless for girls who dare to dream.
