The European Union (EU) and the Government of The Gambia signed a landmark 1.7 billion dalasi (€20 million) Financing Agreement today to revolutionize the country’s agri-food systems, with a focus on modernizing the horticulture sector and empowering women, youth, and rural communities. The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Finance’s Conference Hall, marked a significant milestone in enhancing food security, creating green jobs, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

EU Ambassador Roca i Cortes formalized the agreement with The Gambia and Hon. Seedy K. M. Keita, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs. Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, and the Food Safety and Quality Authority (FSQA) attended, highlighting the collaborative nature of the initiative.

Hon. Keita described the agreement as a “significant milestone” for rural development and food security. “This programme will boost food production, create decent jobs, and ensure greater resilience against climate change,” he said, aligning it with The Gambia’s national goals. The initiative targets the entire agri-food value chain, from production to consumption, to drive economic growth and sustainability.

Ambassador Roca i Cortes emphasized the EU’s commitment to supporting Gambian farmers, particularly women and youth. “This agreement reflects our shared vision to help farmers grow more nutritious food, increase incomes, access new markets, and adopt eco-friendly practices,” she said. The programme aims to create export opportunities and green jobs while strengthening food security and environmental sustainability.

The initiative focuses on three key priorities: increasing investments, productivity, and income opportunities in the horticulture sector, with an emphasis on women and youth; improving plant health, food safety, and sustainable agro-ecological practices; and strengthening diversified, nutrition-sensitive agri-food value chains. These efforts aim to enhance working conditions, improve quality management systems, and promote environmentally friendly farming methods.

The programme will be implemented by COLEAD, a non-profit organization uniting companies and experts dedicated to sustainable agriculture. It will also foster peer-to-peer cooperation between The Gambia’s FSQA and a public administration in an EU member state, enhancing technical expertise and regulatory frameworks.

This agreement builds on the EU’s long-standing partnership with The Gambia, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including food security, gender equality, and climate action. By investing in inclusive and sustainable agriculture, the programme seeks to empower rural communities, boost economic opportunities, and create a resilient food system capable of withstanding climate challenges.

The signing ceremony underscored the shared commitment of the EU and The Gambia to transformative development. As the programme rolls out, it is expected to unlock new opportunities for Gambian farmers, enhance food safety standards, and position the country as a competitive player in regional and global markets.
