In a surprise development that could reshape the opposition landscape ahead of the 2026 elections, Kebba Ceesay, co-founder and initiator of the Citizens Alliance (CA) party, has officially joined the United Democratic Party (UDP), The Gambia’s most prominent opposition force.

Ceesay announced his decision to The Alkamba Times, stating: “Yes, I can confirm to you that I am now UDP… “

This move follows his dramatic resignation from CA on October 27, 2024, where he cited irreconcilable differences with the party’s direction under leader Ismaila Ceesay, who serves as Minister of Information in President Adama Barrow’s administration.

In his resignation letter, Ceesay expressed deep disappointment, apologized to Gambians he may have offended, and emphasized that his values, principles, and vision no longer aligned with CA’s path. He criticized any potential alignment with the Barrow government, describing it as a betrayal of the party’s original purpose as a genuine opposition alternative.

CA later disputed Ceesay’s “co-founder” claim, describing him as an early member rather than a founder, but his departure was seen as a blow to the young party.

The UDP, led by veteran opposition figure Ousainou Darboe, has long positioned itself as the primary challenger to Barrow’s National People’s Party (NPP).

Ceesay’s defection bolsters UDP’s ranks, particularly among those disillusioned with smaller parties and government ties. Observers suggest this could signal growing momentum for a unified opposition front, amid internal challenges within UDP and broader political realignments.

Ceesay’s vocal criticism of the Barrow regime, including corruption, poor healthcare, and unemployment, aligns closely with the UDP’s platform. His joining may energize grassroots supporters seeking a stronger alternative.
